The IB Diploma is challenging by design — the right tutor makes the difference

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme asks students to study six subjects across the sciences, humanities, mathematics, languages and the arts — with at least three at Higher Level — while simultaneously completing a 4,000-word Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge course and a reflective CAS portfolio. Unlike state-based curricula, the IB uses a consistent international standard and assesses students against a global cohort through a combination of internal and external assessment.

The challenge for IB students is not just understanding content — it is managing the cumulative complexity of a programme that demands academic writing, experimental design, oral assessment and original research simultaneously across multiple subjects. A tutor on Learnmate who has completed the IB Diploma identifies exactly where a student is losing marks, builds the subject-specific skills needed for IAs and exams, and adapts each session to the student's current workload and assessment schedule.

What our IB Students Think About Learnmate

AmyReviews rating

Jeannette very friendly and always goes above and beyond by asking for my input on lesson plans, ensuring that our time together is tailored to my needs, and always gives me helpful resources such as powerpoints and worksheets with past paper questions. Her personalised approach has made my learning experience very enjoyable and effective! I highly recommend Jeannette as an IB tutor!

Louisa is an outstanding tutor in Chemistry. I've had Louisa as my tutor for two months now and I can confidently say that she provides excellent academic support to her students. Although I am an IB student and she completed the QCE, Louisa still achieves to precisely teach me the difficult concepts of Chemistry and continually aspires to learn more about the particular IB standards.

MiaReviews rating

Sai has always been able to explain tough concepts in a way that is easy for me to understand and is able to look at a question I've sent last minute and help me understand it with no problem. He has helped me go from a band 5 in IB Maths and Physics to a band 7 in Maths and a band 6 in Physics.

Vivien was my IB English Literature tutor for the past two years in Yr 11 and 12. She is absolutely amazing and is always ready to go out of her way to come up with more resources for practice writing tasks, oral commentaries/presentations & works in translations essays. Discussions are student driven and she will then add her input as to how she can make the said task better. She also provides handy tips to make the best use of time regarding exam revisions. Also, she is very accommodative as she pretty much sets up each class tailored to the student. Personally, I was scoring only 4s (out of 7) at the start of year 11 but obtained a high 6 (out of 7) in my year 12 IB final exam. This would not have been possible without Vivien’s excellent tutoring style and support. Importantly, apart from being just a tutor – she’s like a friend as she knows how intense year 12 can get sometimes and is always ready to provide advice and support to boost your confidence! Thank you so much Vivien!

My son just did his first session on IB essay writing with Rhaihana. When he finished, he was quick to tell me how knowledgeable and lovely she is and how he was feeling much more confident about a forthcoming writing task after just one hour. I am looking forward to his skills in essay writing growing as he does more sessions, as well as his enthusiasm for essay writing - which he currently dreads.

CarolineReviews rating

Kate is an incredibly efficient and compassionate english tutor. She has guided my development in several key areas including a clear formation of ideas and accurate grammar in an enjoyable manner. Her abundant resources and flexibility with her class structure has made my year 12 IB Literature experience significantly easier to manage. The most valuable part of my lessons with Kate is the individual component of her teaching structure. She evokes me to express my analysis of each text and asks insightful, thought provoking questions before she provides her own insight which is very helpful.

FAQS

Frequently asked questions

What is the IB Diploma Programme and how does tutoring help?
The IB Diploma Programme is a two-year pre-university qualification for Years 11 and 12, recognised by universities worldwide. Students study six subjects across sciences, humanities, maths and languages — at least three at Higher Level — alongside the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS. Tutoring helps students manage the programme's breadth, build IA and EE skills, and prepare for exams across multiple subjects simultaneously.
How much does an IB tutor cost in Australia?
Tutors on Learnmate set their own rates. The platform average was $65 per hour in 2025, ranging from around $45–$60 for recent graduates to $80–$120 for qualified IB teachers with extended Diploma experience. Payments are processed automatically by Learnmate after each lesson — no cash or direct payment to the tutor required. Learnmate is significantly more affordable than tutoring agencies.
Can IB tutors help with Internal Assessments and the Extended Essay?
Yes — IAs and the Extended Essay are among the most common reasons IB students seek tutoring support. Tutors on Learnmate help students plan, structure and refine IAs against subject-specific IB criteria, review drafts and prepare for oral defences. For the Extended Essay, tutors assist with research question development, argument structure, academic sourcing and the Reflective Planning Document across all subject groups.
What IB score do I need for a top Australian university?
Most Group of Eight universities accept IB scores from around 30–38 points for competitive courses, with Medicine and Law at leading institutions typically requiring 40–42 or above. The IB score is converted to an ATAR equivalent using state-specific tables — an IB 45 converts to ATAR 99.95 in most states. Individual course requirements and IB equivalents are published by each university's admissions office.
What is the difference between IB SL and HL, and does it affect tutoring?
Higher Level subjects require significantly more study hours than Standard Level — 240 versus 150 — and are assessed on additional content, greater analytical depth and, in some subjects, an extra paper (Paper 3). Tutors on Learnmate support both SL and HL students, and many specify HL subject expertise in their profiles. For HL Chemistry, Maths AA, Physics and History in particular, subject-specific HL experience makes a material difference.
How is the IB Extended Essay marked?
The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent research project assessed against five IB criteria: Focus and Method, Knowledge and Understanding, Critical Thinking, Presentation, and Engagement — with Engagement assessed through the Reflective Planning Document. The EE is marked externally by IB examiners and contributes to the Diploma core alongside TOK, with combined EE and TOK performance worth up to three bonus points toward the final score.

IB tutoring by subject

Learnmate has dedicated tutor pages for every major IB Diploma subject. IB core component support — EE, TOK and IA

The IB core is one of the most demanding aspects of the Diploma Programme. Learnmate has specialist tutors for the Extended Essay — providing support from research question development through to final draft review — and for Theory of Knowledge covering both the TOK essay and presentation. Internal Assessment support is available through subject-specific tutor pages, where tutors bring direct experience with the IA criteria and moderation standards for each subject.

IB vs other Australian curricula

The IB Diploma is offered at a growing number of Australian schools alongside the VCE (Victoria), HSC (New South Wales), QCE (Queensland), WACE (Western Australia) and SACE (South Australia). Unlike state-based curricula, the IB is assessed against an international standard and converted to an ATAR through state-specific scaling tables. Students considering whether to enrol in the IB or a state curriculum can find detailed subject comparisons in Learnmate's blog. For tutoring support across other Australian curricula, see VCE Tutors  and HSC Tutors.
